Terras
crash after penalty controversy
by Jeremy Hill
Monday 29th November 2004
A disputed 69th minute penalty converted by skipper Craig
Edwards saw ten man Redbridge dump Weymouth out of the FA
Trophy at the Oakside Stadium.
Terras boss Steve Johnson, who handed a debut to new signing
Jamie Gosling in Essex, was left fuming by the decision which
he claimed cost his side a certain Second Round replay.
Weymouth started the stronger of the two sides yet didn't
truly test Nicky Wilson in the Redbridge goal.
lan Hutchinson flicked on for Kirk Jackson in the llth minute
but he could only fire
straight at the keeper while Hutchinson saw a decent shot
deflected wide.
Visiting strikers Jackson and Lee Phillips were giving Redbridge
defensive duo
Chris Wild and Shayne Mangodza all sorts of problems in the
early exchanges
with their aerial prowess, yet dispute their attractive build-up
play the Terras were unable to find the target.
Weymouth's dominance was exemplified by the fact that the
hosts had to wait until the 18th minute for their first shot
at goal.
A good spell of Redbridge possession resulted in Richard Thomas
firing straight at Jason Matthews.
The Motormen were finding their stride and Thomas held off
Hutchinson to feed
Yohance Lewis down the right hand side.
His deep cross to the back post was met by Helder Valdez who
headed narrowly wide.
Excellent
After that encouraging opening which provided few chances,
the Terras created
three in a five-minute spell midway through the first half.
Phillips looked to be in on goal after his excellent turn
got him past Mangodza though Wild produced a fine challenge
to thwart him.
Ricky Dobson was booked for a clumsy challenge on Dave Waterman,
and the
resulting free-kick from Gosling was met by Phillips' header
straight at Wilson.
A minute later Phillips again tested Wilson with a low shot,
which the Redbridge keeper was able to collect comfortably.
There were chances at both ends during the ten minutes prior
to half-time as both teams looked to go into the break with
the advantage.
Weymouth started the brighter of the two sides following the
interval but were
unable to create any real chances of note.
The Motormen went close in the 65th minute when Craig Edwards
saw his
header from a Lewis corner cleared off the line and then came
that highly disputed spot-kick.
Even the home supporters appeared surprised when the penalty
was awarded after Simon Browne was adjudged to have pulled
Julian Edwards back.
Despite their protests which led to Steve Tully being booked
for dissent, up
stepped Craig Edwards to send Matthews the wrong way.
Redbridge had their backs to the wall in the last 15 minutes
after Ricky Dobson was sent off for a second yellow card after
tugging back Mark Boyce.
The Terras launched everything at their opponents and Browne
almost saved them in stoppage time with a flying header that
was cleared off the line.
But somehow the Motormen managed to hang on and book their
place in the Third Round draw.
