Redbridge 3 v 2 Weymouth - 12th February 2005

Jackson Off as Terras Floored
By Matt Pitman

Monday 14th February 2005

WEYMOUTH suffered last gasp agony in the mud at lowly Redbridge.

The ten-man Terras conceded a stoppage time winner as the Essex strugglers sent Steve Johnson's side spinning to a second successive defeat.

The visitors looked like earning a hard-earned point when substitute Mark Boyce grabbed a late equaliser at Oakside.

But things started to go wrong for Weymouth when striker Kirk Jackson was controversially sent off for dissent with three minutes remaining.

And the hosts took advantage of the extra man when Greg Lincoln fired a winner in stoppage time to secure Redbridge's first league win in ten games.

Referee Chris Overall took the brunt of the blame from the travelling fans - but in truth the visitors defending was the real reason for their downfall.

Redbridge had netted just once in seven league' games before this Conference South clash.

But their goal-shy attack enjoyed a field day on a quagmire of a pitch to boost their hopes of escaping relegation.

Boyce's cool equaliser, Jackson's dismissal and Lincoln's winner provided late drama in what was an otherwise drab contest.

Until the closing stages, there had been precious little quality on show as both sides battled away in driving rain.

The defeat means Johnson's players have it all to do if they are to reach the Conference play-offs.

Neat passing was always going to difficult and for the opening quarter, Weymouth struggled to adapt.

And after a shaky start, it was no surprise when Redbridge took the lead on 15 minutes.

Striker Graeme Carrick supplied the first of his two assists of the afternoon, crossing for unmarked striker Lloyd Opara to head home.

The goal shocked Weymouth, who included Steve Tully at right back, into action as defender Roy O'Brien fired a drive just wide.

Loan midfielder Nicolas Mirza, about the only bright spot on a miserable afternoon, saw a stinging drive saved by keeper Simon Overland moments later.

And the same player almost got his side back on terms but he was denied by a last-ditch tackle by Ross Crouch.

The conditions dictated both sides getting the ball forward early, with the host's best chance falling to scorer Opara but his effort was blocked by O'Brien.

The Terras pressed to get back on terms and increased the pressure nearer the break.

O'Brien got on the end of Mirza's free kick but his header was cleared from under his own bar by Phil Lumsden.

But Weymouth's efforts were rewarded on 38 minutes from a similar position when Brad Thomas ghosted in to steer home from Steve Tully's clipped cross.

With the game finely balanced, things continued in a similar vein after the interval.

There was plenty of huff, puff and mud but little patient passing, especially when conditions worsened further.

Tully sent a stinging drive wide following some neat approach by Mirza and Jackson.

But Weymouth were left ruing more sloppy defending on 61 minutes when that man Opara again netted.

Carrick was again allowed plenty of room down the flank, with his cross headed home by the lethal Opara.

The visitors had a decent shout for a penalty turned down moments after the restart after a clumsy Lumsden challenge on Cadima.

Johnson made a treble change in a bid to salvage at least a point, introducing Boyce, Kieren Keane and Darren Wheeler.

And those substitutions paid almost instant dividends when Boyce cut in from the right and latched on to Mirza's excellent through ball.

The former Maidenhead United star took the pass in his stride, kept his composure and netted his first Weymouth goal.

The visitors nearly pressed the self -destruct button less than a minute later when Matthews' poor clearance gifted possession to the hosts and from that attack Keith Martin rattled the post.

Weymouth continued to look the most likely though, with Wheeler and Boyce dangerous.

But those hopes as good as disappeared with seven minutes left after Jackson was clattered from behind by marker Anthony Fenton.

The former Hornchurch striker was furious no foul was given but took his protests too far and was red-carded for dissent.

Weymouth's anger was increased moments later when Cadima appeared to be hauled back in the box by a posse of home defenders.

And there was still time for more drama as Redbridge raided forward to clinch it in the third minute of stoppage time.

Lincoln danced through a static Terras rearguard and screwed a low drive past Matthews to seal the victory.
