Tootless Terras crash out
by Dill Butcher
Wednesday 3rd November 2004
A GOAL in each halt tor visitors Newport was enough to see
mis-firing Weymouth
make a shock exit from the Carthium Cup at the first hurdle
and subsequently
miss out on a second round tie at old foes Dorchester.
A lack of confidence in front of goal was clearly visible
for the home fans at the
Wessex Stadium in an opening period that saw entertainment
at a rare premium and an another, all too familiar sight -
the Terras falling behind after bossing the early exchanges.
Rookie 18-year old County reserve keeper Andrew Delve, making
only his third appearance of the season, had to be alert to
block an early chance for
Shaun Wilkinson in the sixth minute and there were few further
Weymouth chances after that as the visitors looked the more
likely to open the scoring.
Full back Kevin Aherne-Evans should have done better 20 minutes
later when he scuffed a shot wide but the warning signs were
there for the home side and it was no surprise when the visitors
edged in front in the 34th.
Parried
Midfielder Darren Jones clipped a ball out wide over the Weymouth
defence for skipper Jamie Moralee to chase.
As the ball skipped towards the bye line the former Millwall
favourite did well to send over a pin-point cross for the
in-rushing Jones whose downward header from six yards was
parried by Ramos.
However, the ball rebounded up kindly for Jones to try his
luck a second time and this time his header found the net
with Ramos helpless.
An instantly forgettable half closed with a swift, purposeful
Terras move through midfield that ended with Paul Gibbs, enjoying
a start at left back, trying his luck from 35 yards and just
missing the left hand upright.
County began the second 45 brightly and Moralee was allowed
a free header inside four minutes of the restart, but somewhat
luckily for the home side, it
flew straight into Ramos' arms.
Then the next real action saw Phillips tee up Adam Wilde when
well placed on the left hand edge of the Newport box right
on the hour mark.
However, the winger tamely side- footed wide of the right
hand post from 15 yards as if to underline a lack of belief
in front of goal for the home side.
Just three minutes later the Terras created further chances
when a swift break begun by Gibbs allowed Wilkinson to link
with Wilde who sent Phillips in on goal.
A superbly executed last-ditch tackle from former Magpie Scott
Morgan may have denied Phillips but the ball ran out wide
to Lee Charles who, cutting back inside
a defender near the bye line, shot with the outside of the
boot, narrowly missin the target.
At the other end Ramos saved bravely at the feet of the menacing
Jones and from the loose ball Aherne-Evans clipped a cross
back into the box for 18-year old Ashley Williams to meet
with a header that flew just a foot wide of the top right
hand corner.
Then, in the 83rd minute, disaster struck as the Welshmen
struck an unlikely second goal through teenage substitute
John Phillips who had replaced Moralee just three minutes
earlier.
Seeking a leveller Weymouth were caught out when Williams
slipped an inch-perfect ball,
that Just beat the offside, to release Phillips cutting inside
from the
right flank.
With Gibbs trailing Ramos desperately ran out of his box in
a vain attempt to narrow the angle and, sent wide, Phillips
somehow managed to screw his shot back across an empty goal
and into the bottom left hand corner.
