ANDY Mason pulled no punches after his
side's second home failure against Welsh opposition in five
days.
The Terras followed up Tuesday's disappointing effort against
Merthyr Tydfil by drawing a blank with Newport County at
the Wessex Stadium.
It was another frustrating afternoon for the manager who
again saw his side waste chances in front of goal like they
were going out of fashion.
He said: "If you don't take your chances, you don't
win football matches. It's as simple as that.
I thought first half we were absolutely awful, probably
the worse I've seen us play. Second half we were a bit better,
but let's face it, we couldn't have been any worse. We've
wasted some cracking opportunities out there and really
I should be sat here talking about our first victory of
the season. We've got to start being ruthless and punishing
teams especially here at the Wessex Stadium."
He added: "But having said that we didn't lose and
with the games coming thick and fast at the moment we've
got an immediate chance to get off the mark at Salisbury."
Meanwhile Mason accused some of his players of being "too
casual" against a team who were played off the park
on their last visit to the resort in April.
"We won that game 4-2", he said, "and it
was one of those days when everything clicked into place.
Trouble is now that there are too many players who think
they only need to turn up and play and not bother with the
hard work."
He added: "Well I'm afraid that that's not how it's
going to be. Players will need to put in more effort from
now on and be far more committed."
With Mark Robinson already nursing a hairline fracture of
an ankle bone, Mason was dealt further injury blows to John
Waldock and David Laws.
He explained: "John twisted his knee and is in a bit
of pain, while David received a stamp on the leg. Obviously
it's a worry having three experienced players struggling
but that's why we strengthened the squad during the summer."
A minute's silence was held before kick-off in memory of
former Terras kitman Neville Boore who died the previous
weekend.
