Six of the Best Terras Teach Town a Lesson
By Paul O'Reilly
28th Janaury 2001
Weymouth produced a superb performance
to complete their first double over Ilkeston Town.
Following on from the Terras' 4-1 demolition
of their hosts at the Wessex in October, Weymouth produced
a skillful footballing display to annihilate Ilkeston today.
It was, in fact, Town who took the initiative, their direct
style causing the Terras a few problems in the first 9 minutes.
But then Lee Phillips struck with a low drive from
inside the area to turn the tide of the game.
Wave after wave of attack saw good chances to extend the
lead appear and disappear before the Town keeper spilled
a shot from outside the area after 31 minutes, and Lee
Phillips was on hand to dispatch the rebound into the
back of the net off the far post.
Ten minutes before half-time, Town started to put some moves
together and managed to pull one back when Rob Gould
struck after 38 minutes, thumping the ball into the
roof of the net whilst his colleagues were claiming for
a penalty for a foul seconds earlier.
Town took the game to Weymouth for about the first five
minutes of the second half, but their long balls were being
scooped up by Cross, Waldock, Browne and Hare, and dispatched
out to Robinson, Hutchinson or Hale for a counter-attack.
On 62 minutes, a ball over the top found David Laws inside
the area and his chip into the middle was headed home off
the bar by Lee Phillips for a true hat-trick.
Quarter of an hour to go and Mark Robinson justifiably
added his name to the scoresheet with a placed left foot
shot into the far corner. Town were now dead and buried.
Gammon replaced Hare and Dean later replaced Hutchinson.
Then, with two minutes to go, Weymouth attacked so viciously
that they were spoilt for choice for who should shoot. Eventually,
Lee Phillips clipped the ball to the far post where an unmarked
Mark Gammon rose to head home.
There was even time for David Laws to add a sixth
to complete the rout in the 90th minute.
Lee Phillips was eventually presented with the matchball
in the club bar by Ilkeston manager, John McGovern, the
former Nottingham Forest medal winner.
What a day. What a performance. And next up is the FA Trophy.
