Terras Stuff The Magpies
by Steve Dadd & Pete Pavey
27th December 2000
Bottom of the table Dorchester visited
the Wessex Stadium today in the full knowledge that Weymouth
would be seeking revenge for their earlier dismissal from
the FA cup earlier in the season, the Terras would not disappoint.
Weymouth elected an attacking formation playing Laws, Phillips
and Rowbotham up front, Dorchester's troubles started in
the 20th second when Mark Jermyn was booked for a late over
the top challenge on Simon Browne, four minutes later a
Sullivan cross as met by O'Hagan, but his effort went well
over.
Weymouth started to put their game together. With crisp
passing it was no surprise that with seven minutes gone,
Rowbotham pushed the ball through to new signing Lee
Phillips, he ran a full 40 yards fending off tackles
before placing the ball past the on rushing Ormerod.
Radcliffe was next into the referee's notebook straight
from the re start.
Dorchester had a free kick from outside the area, but Sullivan's
effort was wasted.
Dorchester equalised after 19 minutes, Ferret's cross was
not cut out by the Weymouth defence and
Scott Cannie blasted home from 12 yards.
The impressive Phillips had the Dorchester
defence in panic, he drove driving forward on another surging
run into the box which was only ended with a suspect clumsy
challenge the referee waved play on.
Play was beginning to get scrappy as the pace was upped by
both sides, but Weymouth regained the lead in the 41st minute
when Darran Rowbotham robbed Magpies manager Mark Morris
in the middle of the park, racing goalwards he chipped the
statuesque Ormerod from 20 yards.
Right on half time Darren Rowbotham surged down the right
flank sent in a low cross, but the advancing Laws failed to
connect.
Weymouth 2 Dorchester 1
Mark Gammon replaced Darren Rowbotham and Marcus Oldbury substituted
Morris.
With 44 minutes left on the clock the referee bizarrely booked
Potter for time wasting.
After 51 minutes Weymouth increased their lead, Gammon, on
one of his characteristic runs down the right, crossed the
ball which eluded a number of Dorchester bodies, and Mark
Robinson was there at the far post to bury the ball into
the net.
The irrepressible Phillips, who looks a useful acquisition
found Hare, Hare raced to the by line, crossed and Gammon
header went inches over.
Dorchester's Chris Ferret's useful free kick rattled the
home sides cross bar.
David Laws silenced the Dorchester Boo boys after
82 minutes. Dispossessing Mark Jermyn, Laws raced on goal,
rounded the keeper, and slotted home to make it four.
Martin Underhay made a welcome appearance, but with only minutes
remaining failed to make an impact.
In front of a disappointing crowd of 2005, (The Dorchester
section of the main stand 38 in all) the final score was:
Weymouth 4 Dorchester 1
