Profile
Name: James Corbin
Place of Birth: Portwey Hospital, Weymouth, 10th June
1987
Occupation: DJ, Producer & Label Owner
Years following the Terras: 16
Favourite Terras player of all time: Matty Hale
In Depth
RB:
Hi James, thanks for taking part. Let's start by learning
how you became an avid supporter of the Terras?
JC: My dad took me to a home game
against Waterlooville in 1994. We became fully fledged Terras
from then on!
RB: Is there much you can remember
from that Waterlooville fixture?
JC: It was a blazing hot summer's
day. Billy Gilbert got sent off and the game was an 'interesting'
0-0 draw! I think we stood in the far right corner of the
now Hollybush end.
RB: Matty Hale is your favourite
player of all-time. What impressed you so much about him during
his playing career with the club?
JC: He was one of the most professional
players I have ever seen. A nippy left-back, with a low centre
of gravity and the ability to go past players and get good
crosses in. He wasn't scared of the bigger players either
and gave 100% during his time on the pitch for us. I always
felt in those days, that he would go on to be a manager/coach,
he knew the game well, you could see that in his play.
RB: I'm sure you were thrilled then
to hear that Matty was returning to the club as our new manager?
JC: I'm absolutely delighted to
have him, Hutch & Mase amongst our coaching staff these
days, those guys were legends on the pitch and the club feels
like Weymouth FC again.
RB: Can you recall any funny or
unfortunate moments from over the years whilst you've been
watching the Terras?
JC: There has of course been several
'hit in the face with the ball' moments in the terraces over
my time watching the Terras with portions of chips and cups
of tea going everywhere. Then there was the time that we played
Eastleigh and Wayne Shaw was in goal, but the funniest moment
of my time as a fan has to be the time we stuffed Dorchester
8-0
and Philpott makes it eight!
RB: One of the key events for the
club in its recent history was our defeat to the hands of
Rushden & Diamonds in February. Can you remember your
initial emotions?
JC: I remember all the confusion
around the time of the game. What players would we field?
Will any of our senior players play? I was doing the stand
transfers for that game, and Rob Golsby had managed to get
a team-sheet. He had to spend about an hour prior to the game
explaining to me who everyone was as the whole team were his
mates from Weymouth Academy!
We knew that we were going to get stuffed, and we had said
before kick-off that "anything under 10-0 would be a
miracle". I felt a huge sense of pride seeing our youngsters
battle it out for our cause. Joe Prodomo made some amazing
saves that day to keep the score to 9-0.
RB: Which Weymouth game would you
say is the best you've had the pleasure to watch?
JC: Too many, so I'll round it down
to three:
12.08.06 vs. Tamworth - Won 3-1 - Smith, Vickers, and Downer
We we're back in the conference for the first time in decades
and the first time in my life. We go away to Tamworth and
Ben Smith opens the scoring in 9 seconds into the kick-off.
What a feeling.
04.10.06 vs. Gravesend & Northfleet - Won 2-1 - Smith,
Logan
We we're live on Sky Sports 1 and Ben Smith scores arguably
the best goal the Wessex has seen, a 40 yard lob at the Hollybush
End. Logan gets the winner with a superbly worked goal provided
by Lee Elam.
17.04.06 vs. St Albans - Won 3-2 - Nade, Bound (2)
The title six-pointer at the Wessex. Super Matty Bound smashes
home a penalty past a flailing Paul Bastock effectively putting
the Terras into the Conference.
RB: On the other hand, has there ever been a Terras game that
you've regretted going to?
JC: 23.01.07 vs. Exeter - Lost 4-0
After losing pretty much all our players. We went away to
Exeter who had nabbed Lee Elam off us and surprise, surprise
he scores a hat-trick. All this whilst I'm still wearing a
shirt with 'Elam' on the back. Bad times.
RB: Next season will see the battle
between Weymouth and Dorchester recommence. Do you look forward
to the derby matches, or find them unbearably tense?
JC: No I love them, nothing better
than going over the ridge and showing those northerners how
to play!
RB: Who would be in your greatest
Weymouth Eleven?
JC: Something like this
this is always
such a hard question! Matthew Bates, Matty Hale, Trevor Challis,
Matty Bound, Steve Tully, Lee Elam, Ben Smith, Ian Hutchinson,
Stuart Beavon, David Laws, Lee Phillips (4-4-2)
Extra Time
RB: What song would you use to pump
the team up before a game?
JC: It would have to be one of the
following (I couldn't choose one):
Rob D - Clubbed To Death, The Prodigy -
Minefields, or Mozart's Summer Overture (Requiem for a Dream)
RB: What player would you love to see in a Weymouth
shirt?
JC: Kaka? Ronaldo? Maicon? Directors
get your £100m out! We know you've got it hiding away
somewhere!
RB: What is your worst nightmare
as a Terras fan?
JC: What very nearly happened to
us last season, I really thought we might be goners! I would
hate to go through that again
RB: Finally, what are your hopes
for the club next season, on and off the pitch?
JC: Financial stability is first
and foremost, we've been given a lifeline by those who managed
to sort the club out, but we are not out of the woods yet.
We've got a great coaching team and it looks like they are
building a well thought out team that can do well this season
without breaking the bank. I'd like to think we can get back
into the Conference within two seasons. Let's make it happen!
