Welcome to the second fan interview
for the official website. Thanks for all the entries so far,
and I'm still interested to hear from more of you. Information
on how to apply is at the bottom of the page. This week Graham
Masters takes part.
Profile
Name: Graham Masters
Place of Birth: Weymouth
Occupation: Support Worker
Years following the Terras: 40
Favourite Terras player of all time: Tony Agana, Andy
Townsend, Peter Johnson.
In Depth
RB: Evening Graham, good to
speak to you. Let's begin by learning how you became an avid
supporter of the Terras?
GM: Through my fathers friendship
with the late, great Phil Stocker who played many, many games
for the Terras.
RB: Is there much you remember
from your first live experience of Weymouth FC?
GM: It was against Folkestone
at the Rec in December 1966. It was a freezing cold day, and
I was hanging over the barrier in front of the old Sidney
Hall. I remember Folkestone wore a gold and black striped
kit. The crowd was 1,241 (I cheated and got that info from
Biddies book) with the game ending 1-1.
RB: Can you recall any memories
from over the years which were quite surreal?
GM: A lot of my memories centre
around being at some great games in my 40 plus years of following
the Terras, and being with many fantastic fans at away games
in the 70's and 80's.
Two memories do stand out - One of them involving the aforementioned
Mr. Biddlecome in a game at Redditch in November 1980. Redditch
were getting stuffed by everyone at the time, and this game
was no exception with us winning by two goals to nil.
Their keeper appeared to be thoroughly cheesed off with the
game and the appalling weather that day, and I remember Nigel
standing on one side of the keeper's goal post with the keeper
on the opposite side during a break in play sharing a drop
of the hard stuff! Just one of those moments that touched
me, and has stayed with me ever since.
I also remember a League Cup game
at Gravesend that same season when we were 2-0 down with a
few minutes left. We pulled one back through Anni Iannone,
then a Jimmy McCafferty cross was met with a powerful Graham
Roberts header and the comeback was complete.
The next thing I knew was that one of our sadly departed Terras
fans, Pete Ebrill, went flying over the wall behind the goal,
with his dog following on, and the next thing I knew there
was a mass celebration of Terras fans on the pitch. We couldn't
get away with it these days!
I have many, many more great memories
which would take me a lifetime to tell.
RB: Tony Agana, Andy Townsend
and Peter Johnson are your favourite players of all-time.
They're all different types of player, what impressed you
about each of them?
GM: Tony Agana had the pace,
skill and ability to beat any defender from either the middle
or wide positions, and he must have excited anyone who watched
him play for the Terras. Andy Townsend was probably the most
gifted midfield player I have seen in a Weymouth shirt, and
along with Anni he could strike a ball harder than most.
They were two of Brian Godfreys more inspired signings. Also
Ive met them both and they're really nice guys. Peter Johnson
was another direct winger who could beat anyone of his day.
One of those wingers who seemed to have the ball stuck to
his feet when he took defenders on. Another nice guy!
RB: One of the key events for
the club in its recent history was our defeat to the hands
of Rushden & Diamonds in February. Can you remember your
initial emotions?
GM: I felt shell shocked to
say the least, yet full of pride for the eleven in a Terras
shirt that day and the image of their huddle will stay with
me for a long, long time. As for the fans, they were unbelievable!
RB: When you sent me your e-mail
of interest, you mentioned that you were a referee in years
gone by, and had even taken control of some Terras games.
From your experiences can you understand why refs are not
allowed to be involved with their own teams?
GM: As a referee I had to be
totally impartial, even when refereeing the Terras. Although
I did briefly referee at Conference South level, I was not
allowed to referee Weymouth due to me living too close. However,
I refereed the Terras many times in friendlies and in county
cup competitions.
I was strangely permitted to run the line in league games
involving them however, and some Terras fans may well remember
me being on the line in the 8-0 trouncing of the Magpies!
I was mentioned in rather unpleasant terms as being biased
on their website. As if I could have influenced that scoreline!
RB: Did the Terras fans treat
you fairly when you were refereeing their games?
GM: I always found the fans
as the Wessex good fun, and was able to have a lot of banter
with them. I think it did help that many of them knew me,
although sometimes they are not so kind to the officials!
RB: Which Weymouth game would you say is the best you've
had the pleasure to watch?
GM: As I was refereeing on
the day of the Forest game, it has to be at Cardiff in the
FA Cup, I was there! Emotions ranging from resignation at
2-0 down after twenty minutes, to extreme elation at the final
whistle and getting home plastered!
RB: Who would be in your greatest
Weymouth Eleven?
GM: John Clarke, Bryan Lawrence, Alex
Browne, Tony Hobson, Paul Morrell, Anni Iannone, Andy Townsend,
Graham Roberts, Tony Agana, David Laws, Peter Johnson. Subs
- Kevin Roberts, Paul Arnold, Ralph Miller, Ben Smith, Steve
Claridge, Rafael Nade, Stuart Beavon, Alan Beer.
RB: What player would you love
to see in a Weymouth shirt?
GM: It'd be great to see some
Terras players of yesteryear playing in today's team. It goes
without saying we would be the top non-league team in the
country! I am a huge fan of wingers, and a team with Tony
Agana on one wing, and Rafa on the other, as well as Lawsy
on the end of the crosses would be a dream!
I also like players who give 110%
for the cause, and one particular player that played against
us has stood out over the last couple of season. Although
maybe not popular in some quarters, I think Lee McEvilly of
Cambridge Utd and Barrow would be a great player in a Terras
shirt. He is a great striker off the ball, and not afraid
to put himself about as we saw last season.
Extra Time
RB: What song would you use
to pump the team up before a game?
GM: Bachman Turner Overdrive,
You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet. This should be pumped into the
opposition dressing room before the game!
RB: What is your worst nightmare
as a Terras fan?
GM: Losing to Dorchester and
Yeovil!
RB: The Rec or the Wessex?
GM: Easy. The Rec as it has
so many memories and who could forget the atmosphere in the
Gasworks End.
RB: Finally, what are your
hopes for the club next season, on and off the pitch?
GM: On the field, for a team
the fans and town can be proud of. Off the field, I'd hope
for some stability and a sensible financial future.
I'd like to thank Graham for giving
up part of his spare time to take part in this interview.
