The name Halifax is said to be a corruption of the Old English words for Holy and Face, part of the local legend that the head of John the Baptist was buried here after his execution.

The legend is almost certainly medieval rather than ancient, though the town's coat of arms still carries an image of the saint.

Directions

You can go either via the M5/M6 or the A34/M40/M1, but whichever way you decide you must find yourself on the M62 in Yorkshire.

The directions from the M62 are as follows. Leave at either Junction 24 (Halifax) or Junction 25 (Brighouse). Follow the signs for Halifax. The Shay is signposted from all major routes into the town.

If all else fails head for Eureka Children's Museum (which is extensively signposted) and follow signs for The Shay from there.

Parking is available in the Halifax PLC Multi-Storey Car Park at the rear of the North Stand.
